In 1943, Japan ended its deferments for college students, giving the military its last large infusion of new blood. As they were last-minute draftees, there was little time or opportunity to send them through the traditional officer’s training, so many ended up as cannon fodder, including a large number who were quickly taught to fly just well enough to be kamikaze.
